Hypertension and Acupuncture

While the results of some trials and case studies suggest some benefits of acupuncture for managing hypertension, the results must be treated with caution because of serious methodological limitations. But, significant changes in blood viscosity parameters of patients were observed before and after the treatment.

Researchers found that patients with hypertension achieved significant short-term reductions in systolic and diastolic blood pressure following the administration of acupuncture.

They conducted a systematic review to estimate the effect of acupuncture on blood pressure in hypertensive patients. Diastolic and systolic blood pressure were reduced. Considering the limitation of the four positive noninferiority studies and the results of the meta-analysis of the three sham-controlled studies, the notion that acupuncture may lower high blood pressure is inconclusive. More rigorous trials are warranted.
