Zinc Side Effects, Interactions and Warnings

Paper reviews possible hazards associated with high intake of folic acid in the general population. Among the potential safety issues are interaction between folic acid and zinc.

Copper deficiency was found in an adult patient who had received excessive daily oral zinc for 10 mo. The deficiency was characterized by hypochromic-microcytic anemia, leukopenia, and neutropenia. These data suggest that the elimination of excess zinc is slow and that, until such elimination occurs, the intestinal absorption of copper is blocked.

Zinc overuse or overdose may cause paleness, orthostatic pulse changes or heart murmur, anemia and neutropenia. Toxicity can also cause a deficiency in copper levels.

Possible interaction between dietary iron and zinc.
